Epic Records is pleased to announce the release of celebrated jazz singer Jane Monheit's first holiday-themed collection, The Season, on October 18th. Called "the real thing" by The New York Times and "jazz's next sultry sweetie" by People Magazine, Monheit is one of jazz's hottest young stars. This is her debut on Epic Records and the fifth studio album of her already established and successful career. It is also the first of her records that Monheit has co-produced.

The Season, was also co-produced and recorded by eleven-time Grammy Award winner Al Schmitt (Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Jefferson Airplane), at New York's Avatar Studios in July 2005. It was mixed by Schmitt at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. Jane previously worked with Schmitt on her Sony Classical release, Taking A Chance on Love (2004), which featured her hit duet with jazz crooner Michael Bublé, "I Won't Dance." This is the first record Monheit has helped co-produce.

Inspired by her favorite holiday album, Ella Fitzgerald's 1960 Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas (Verve), Monheit creates inventive renditions of an eclectic repertoire of songs. The album spans eleven tracks that range from the Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling" and the 19th century carol "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" to perennial favorites likes "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Santa Claus is Coming To Town." See below for full track listing.

The album is the creation of Jane's regular working quartet: drummer Rick Montalbano, bassist Orlando Le Fleming, guitarist Miles Okazaki, and Michael Kanan on piano and keyboards. They are accompanied on four of the tracks by a top-shelf horn section, arranged and conducted by Rob Mounsey, which includes trumpeter Lew Soloff and tenor saxophonist Andy Snitzer. Mounsey also arranged and conducted the string section heard on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Grown-Up Christmas List," and "Merry Christmas Darling." Vibraphonist Dave Samuels adds his special touch to "The Christmas Waltz."

"On her fourth album, Taking A Chance On Love, singer Jane Monheit makes her leap to the majors and the fit is a good one. ... Monheit is a traditional stylist who expertly mines American standards by balancing pop's accessible sensibility and jazz's rich complexity.--her exceptional technique again brings these songs to life without taking liberties with structure, melody or odd arrangements. It's her exceptional execution, tonal palette, and phrasing that gives these songs a sense of artistry." -- Amazon.com

* * * *(4 Stars) "Pure-toned ... She puts a little swing in her step on numbers like 'I Won't Dance,' a playful duet with Michael Bublé. Best, though, is her lovely, Brazilian-tinged 'Embraceable You' accompanied only by guitarist Romero Lumbambo." -- People Magazine

***(3 Stars) "She applies her lush, creamy tone with a winningly light touch to standards such as Honeysuckle Rose and I Won't Dance, a duet with fellow nouveau crooner Michael Bublé. ..Monheit's generally canny artistry, coupled with the impeccable production provided by Peter Asher and Al Schmitt, make this Chance a sure bet." -- Gardner, USA Today

* * * *(4 Stars) "... Jane Monheit shuffles accompaniments, attitudes and tempos in her newest recital, whose now familiar roots run deep into a dozen of the finest songs one could want ... Her range rests on a pitch-perfect voice that can bridge the rigors of the theater, which is a form of musical acting, and the flexibility of jazz, which is instrumental in spirit ... Hip and perky ... Jerome Kern's 'Bill' sounds luminous ... Even more intimate is 'Embraceable You' with guitarist Romero Lubambo ... A special transcendent other-worldliness on 'Over the Rainbow' ... Monheit rises to the occasion with a quietly emotional performance that never overplays its hand." -- DownBeat (October 2004)

"This lady is some kind of singer ... The results are fabulous ... Bravos all around! ... Monheit's style is unique ... She makes these songs sound as though they were newly created ... You've never heard these timeless songs of American popular music sung like this ... Grab this one!" -- Copley News Service (August 17, 2004)

"Jane has an unabashed love for standards ... Her hallmark clarity cannot be denied ... 'In the Still of the Night' is exquisite ... 'Do I Love You?' allows Jane to spread her emotional wings ... She invites great intimacy when in a duet, with 'Embraceable You,' she is partnered by Romero Lubambo on guitar, a perfect arrangement ... If most of this set does not leave you tingling, then it is too late to see a doctor; you are probably dead." -- Jazz Now (September 2004)

"Monheit ... is what you'd call old-school ... Sometimes she's swinging with top sidemen ... Other times she's milking it with a full orchestra ... her lines in 'Taking a Chance on Love' dart like hummingbirds, and the vocal filigree on 'Honeysuckle Rose' is dazzling." -- Tracks (September 2004)

"10 out of 10! ... There a few albums that when you listen to them, you immediately know that you're holding an instant classic in your hands - one of those albums that changes an artist's career forever. Taking a Chance on Love should be that kind of album for Jane Monheit this year ... Everything comes together perfectly this time ... It might be safe to say that she IS the most talented jazz vocalist of our time ... Monheit is absolutely on fire on this release ... One of the wonderful things about this album is how the songs are delivered in a variety of formats, making sure that there's never a lull on the CD ... Only one world can describe Jane's performance - 'flawless' ... Everything is perfect, from the track list all the way down to the CD jacket." -- Plainview (TX) Daily Herald (September 7, 2004)
